Right now, Charleston is in the thick of one of its biggest and most beloved cultural events. For 17 days and nights, the city is taken over by opera, theater, dance, and musical performances of all kinds. The event is spread out throughout the city’s theaters, churches, and outdoor performance spaces. This year is its 42nd annual event. Here’s how to celebrate Spoleto Festival right!

For a bit of background, Spoleto Festival was founded in 1977 by Gian Carlo Menotti, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, and other artists who wanted to recreate the Festival of Two Worlds from Spoleto, Italy. Since 1977, the festival has built up a robust program of established acts from all over the world. To see the complete program, check out the festival website.

It’s not too late to join in the fun — the festival goes on for another 10 days. There are still plenty of tickets left for events left. If you want to plan an outing with a group of friends, a romantic night on the town, or with family, one of the most stressful parts of festivals and big urban events is the transportation. Parking, traffic, and wanting to celebrate while staying responsible are just a few things that you’ll have to deal with.
