Charleston has become one of premier tourist destinations in the south. Thanks largely to Southern charm, great food, beautiful landscapes, and, of course, its history. There’s plenty to do in Charleston, SC, and historic landmarks to check out. From historic homes to incredible architecture, make Charleston your next vacation city. Pick up a few travel souvenirs, tour plantations, and visit landmarks throughout the city.
Here are just a few of the most popular landmarks for tourists to visit in Charleston:
Waterfront Park
The 12-acre Waterfront Park is one of the most well known landmarks in the city. It includes 1,000 feet of waterfront, old-fashioned park benches, double swings facing the water, and fountains. The most iconic fountain in Charleston is the unusual Pineapple Fountain, which is lighted at night.
Old Exchange Building & Provost Dungeon
The Old Exchange Building, also known as the Custom House or The Exchange, was built in 1771 and the dungeon was used as a prison during the Revolutionary War (as well as for pirates!). The building is owned by the South Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who also provide guided costumed tours on all three floors of the building.
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter is where the Civil War started when the Confederacy first shot the federal fort located in Charleston Harbor. The fort ruins have been well preserved and National Park Rangers tell the story of Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter can only be reached by boat.
The Magnolia Plantation & Gardens
The Magnolia Plantation & Gardens have been opened to visitors in Charleston since 1870, making them America’s oldest publicly accessed gardens. Tours are available to the house and an Antebellum cabin. There’s also exhibits, boat tours, nature center and petting zoo.
Ravenel Bridge
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is one of the architectural marvels of Charleston. The bridge spans the Cooper River and connects downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. Completed in 2005, the bridge offers walking or biking paths with sweeping views of Charleston.
